Try the drums
The surdo lays down the deep pulse, the caixa underpins everything with a carpet of fast strokes. Repinique and dobra lead the melodic dialogue in the foreground: the repinique sets the high accents, the dobra answers with deeper melodies between the surdos. Together we find out which drum suits you.
-
Play along
Then we learn one of our songs together, part by part: we explain each section before we play it together. Every drum has a lead, an experienced player you can follow the whole time. At the end you play the song with the whole group.
Beginner workshops
Once or twice a year we run beginner workshops for anyone without a musical background, publicly announced. The next date will be listed under events soon.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to read music?
No. Samba reggae is learned by listening, counting and playing along. Changes and breaks are called with hand signs and a whistle, which you pick up in the first rehearsals.
Do I need musical experience?
It helps, but it is not a must. If you already play drums, percussion or another instrument, or you dance, you find the groove faster at rehearsal. With no musical background at all, a beginner workshop is the best start: we run one or two a year, publicly announced. You find the dates under events.
What should I bring?
Comfortable clothes, ideally black, our club colour, and something to drink. We provide drum, sticks, knee pads, strap and ear protection for the taster session.
How old do I need to be?
You can become a member from 18. If you are younger, we need written consent from your parent or guardian.
When can I play at gigs?
Our musical direction and the lead of your drum decide that together, once you are confident enough. With talent it can happen quickly. Your first gigs are usually ones where we play more in the background: a mistake is fine there. As you grow more confident, you can join our show formation, with tight playing and choreography with the drum.
Do I have to play at gigs?
No, there is no obligation. But we gladly encourage everyone who is ready, because gigs are huge fun.
